Know your Brushes

Brushes

Brushes are one of the most common and traditional types of makeup applicators. Available in a range of sizes, densities, and stiffness. They can be used for everything from even foundation coverage across the entire face to precision eyeliner. Brushes can be used to apply any type of product (liquid as well as powder). And they work by building up coverage in layers rather than all at once.

Tips for cleaning your brushes

You can find special makeup brush cleansers, but I recommend always using a normal shampoo (or Johnson’s baby shampoo) or even a gentle cleanser and it works just fine!

While washing, swirl the brushes in the palm of your hand to help release any old product – for the beauty sponge, just squeeze over and over while rinsing. After you’ve washed your brushes and rinsed them under warm water, lay them on a washcloth to dry. Clean and bacteria free!

What’s your skin craving?

Hydration is key

You might think hydration is something that only people with dry or dehydrated skin need to worry about. But hydrating your skin is just like hydrating your body: Your body needs hydration to look and feel its best — and, no matter your skin type, so does your skin.

If you have dehydrated skin, try a hydrating serum

If your skin is dehydrated, you need to actively add water back into the skin. Look for a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid, which retains an impressive 1,000 times its weight in water. It will add a healthy dose of hydration back into the skin.

Ingredients you’ll definitely want to try: hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, honey

If you have oily skin, try water-based hydrators and moisturizers

Just because you have an oily skin type doesn’t mean your skin isn’t dehydrated — and if your skin is dehydrated, it can actually exacerbate your oil issues.

People with oily skin often have compromised barrier function, which makes it hard for their skin to retain moisture. As moisture leaves the skin, it becomes dehydrated, causing the skin to produce more oil.

It’s a vicious cycle, and the only way to break it is to give your skin the proper hydration and moisture it needs.

Look for water-based, noncomedogenic hydrators and moisturizers. Water-based products will feel lighter on the skin and won’t clog your pores.

NOURISHING DIY HAIR MASKS

Avocado Honey Hair Mask

A hair mask that’s clean enough (and yummy enough) to eat!

  • Prep Time: 5 minutes

  • Total Time: 5 minutes

  • Yield: 2 – 4 masks

Ingredients:

Instructions:

1. Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.

2. Apply the mask evenly throughout your hair, massaging into the scalp as well.

3. Cover with a shower cap and let it sit for at least 20 minutes (45 minutes – an hour is

ideal).

4. Rinse off the mask with a natural shampoo.

Let’s get into it!!

In my attempt to make self-care a priority, I wanted to find an all natural hair mask! Anyone can make this at home – there’s no need to go buy an expensive one (plus this one is probably better than any that you’ll buy!) This mask contains nourishing whole food ingredients such as avocado, banana, Wedderspoon Raw Manuka Honey (I used Kfactor 16), coconut oil and spirulina. THAT’S IT! As you can see this mask is so clean you could literally eat it! I tasted it and it was actually really good!

Why add honey?

So, I discovered that the reason to add honey into the hair mask ingredients is because honey is an emollient which helps to regulate, retain and seal in moisture in your hair, which also reduces breakage. Honey is also known to strengthen hair follicles for healthy growth. Also, honey has rich antioxidant, antibacterial and antiseptic properties which prevent damage and infections keeping your scalp and hair healthy. It can also sooth conditions such as eczema, dandruff and psoriasis. Last but not least, putting honey in your hair is known to boost hair growth and also stimulates hair re-growth from dormant follicles.

Now lets talk about the rest of the ingredients!!!

Now that you know why honey is so awesome in a hair mask, this is why the other ingredients in the mask are also amazing for your hair: Avocado helps rejuvenate and moisturize the scalp and is a rich source of proteins, amino acids and vitamins. Avocado also helps soothe the scalp and promotes long, strong, healthy hair growth. Coconut oil is well-known for helping hair growth by moisturizing and conditioning the hair. Coconut oil contains a ton of vitamins and essential fatty acids that will nourish the scalp and help to remove sebum build-up from hair follicles. Bananas are packed with antioxidants and vitamin C, making them great for your hair! Spirulina is a natural source of bioavailable iron, which promotes hair growth (hair loss is also the first sign of iron deficiency, so taking spirulina internally is very beneficial for hair health too).
